Classic Texas Frito Pie (USA)
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef
1 small onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can (15 oz) chili beans
1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with green chilies for extra flavor, optional)
1 packet taco seasoning or 2 tbsp chili powder
2 cups your favorite chips or the classic Frito corn chip
1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
Optional toppings: Sour cream, sliced jalapeños, chopped green onions, fresh cilantro
Instructions:
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Cook the beef mixture: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
Add aromatics: Stir in diced onions and minced garlic. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until onions are translucent.
Season and simmer: Mix in taco seasoning, chili beans, and diced tomatoes. Simmer for 5 minutes to meld flavors.
Assemble the Frito Pie: Spread a layer of Fritos corn chips evenly in a baking dish.
Layer the chili: Pour the beef and chili mixture over the Fritos.
Top with cheese: Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese generously over the top.
Bake: Place the dish in the oven and bake for 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Garnish and serve: Remove from the oven, let cool for 5 minutes, and add desired toppings.
